UPS questions and practical answers
Choose the right capacity, understand the key parameters, and use your UPS safely.
How do VA, watts, and Best Load help me choose the right UPS?
VA describes apparent power, while watts are the real-power limit to compare with your equipment. Add the actual watt draw of every device that will use battery backup, then choose a model whose Best Load range covers that total. This range leaves useful headroom for short power peaks and future devices.
Why does backup time change with the connected load?
Runtime decreases as the connected watt load increases. Compare Backup values only when they use the same test load. Actual runtime also varies with the UPS model, battery charge, battery age, and operating temperature.
When should I choose pure sine wave instead of simulated sine wave?
Pure sine wave is the preferred choice for sensitive electronics, active-PFC power supplies, workstations, and NAS equipment. Simulated sine wave models are intended for lighter network and office devices that their manufacturers approve for this waveform.
What does the Transfer parameter mean?
Transfer is the maximum listed time the UPS may take to switch from utility power to battery. A model rated at 10 ms or less switches faster than one rated at 20 ms or less. Most computer and networking power supplies tolerate this brief gap, but it is not zero-transfer online UPS operation.
What does AVR do?
Automatic Voltage Regulation corrects moderate input-voltage fluctuations without using the battery. This helps deliver steadier voltage and preserves battery capacity for an outage. AVR is not a replacement for whole-building lightning protection.
Can I use these UPS models with refrigerators, heaters, or laser printers?
No. Do not connect refrigerators, microwaves, sump pumps, space heaters, laser printers, or other equipment with large motors, heating elements, or high startup surges. Use electronic loads that remain within the UPS watt rating.
Can I plug the UPS into an extension cord or surge protector?
Plug the UPS directly into a properly grounded wall outlet. Do not place a surge protector or extension cord between the wall outlet and the UPS, and do not daisy-chain UPS units. Follow the installation instructions in the model's manual.
Will any UPS automatically shut down my NAS?
Backup power alone keeps a NAS running temporarily but does not automatically perform a safe shutdown. Choose a Pro NAS model with communication support, then confirm compatibility with your NAS or operating system and any required cable or software.
What maintenance does a LiFePO4 UPS battery need?
LiFePO4 batteries provide longer service and cycle life than conventional lead-acid UPS batteries and require no routine battery maintenance. Keep the vents clear, stay within the manual's temperature limits, and test backup operation periodically. Actual battery life depends on use and environment.
